CHI Prayas Cradle-to-Career, New Delhi, India

Priyanka and her family live in a New Delhi slum, where her father works as a driver. With very little income coming into the home, the family struggled to make ends meet while affording basic treatment for the mother’s critical kidney disease.

Priyanka began attending classes at CHI-Prayas: first, computer applications, then English speaking and life skills. Not only did the courses give Priyanka practical skills but they increased her confidence dealing with people outside of where she grew up.

Now Priyanka is employed as an office assistant in a local company, bringing more resources into her household and creating a means to her own financial independence.

My name is Kamla, I’ve been associated with Children’s Hope Prayas (CHP) since the past 14 years. My husband’s name is Ramdas, he has never been consistent with his jobs. I was going through a lot of financial difficulties. One day I took part in an Awareness Programme organized by CHP. Slowly, I started taking part in all the programmes. Just after two months, I became a member of the Ramabai Self Help Group (SHG). Then, after taking a loan, I started selling biscuits, toffees, and other small stuff from my house itself. Later, I took loan five times and after that bought a fridge and turned a small portion of my house into a general store. My husband has also started helping me with this work as there were a lot more customers. If it wouldn’t have been CHP, I would not have ever stood on my feet as I have now. I thank CHP for helping me and making me independent.
